International private medical insurance (IPMI) is a must have for expatriates.

International private medical insurance (IPMI) is a must have for expatriates.

The cost of medical treatment is rising all around the world and with real pressure on public finances, access to publically funded healthcare for expats – which always was limited – is becoming nigh on impossible. Expatriates have to accept that they either take out private medical insurance – or face the real possibility of being unable to access healthcare when they most need it.

Steve Nelson from April Medibroker comments:

“Expats need advice as the range of plans, benefits and costs is wide. The market is far from commoditised and high-quality advice can help an expatriate to identify the plan which is right for their circumstances and their pocket.

Most providers offer a choice of plans, ranging from budget “major medical” – which provides basic emergency cover – to high value plans which offer additional cover for outpatient care, dental treatment and a wide range of other benefits.

Our clients need confidence, transparency, good value and service from an independent source they can rely upon when moving country or location. We illustrate healthcare definitions so that you know what you are buying.

Providing the right level of cover tailored to the need of each customer has always been important to us here at April Medibroker, which we will continue to develop in 2010 and beyond.”

Expats are shopping around even more for their international PMI coverage

Over recent years budget airlines and the once strong Pound have encouraged tens of thousands of Britons to buy second properties abroad, or simply decide a life in the sun is possibly better than a life of congestion, taxes and traditional British weather. This has led to some very large British expatriate centres of population being created around the Mediterranean, and in the US and Asia.

Since the credit crunch, life in the sun has come progressively harder for expats. However, to protect policyholders from wild fluctuations in exchange rates during the policy year, many international PMI providers will have a fixed “conversion” rate between the major currencies for benefits and premiums.

Long-term changes in exchange rates can have dramatic effects on an expats monthly income and expenditure. Globally, expats are shopping around even more for their international PMI coverage, with many considering limiting benefits or switching providers at renewal to reduce premiums.

Expats often prefer to buy from a British, Financial Services Authority-regulated professional PMI intermediary rather than from their local insurance salesman.

For those concerned about the costs of living abroad, April Medibroker specialise in providing international health insurance to clients living abroad or working abroad to both choose and place the right international health insurance products, to suit their expat medical insurance needs and budget.

Repatriation figures to UK shores 'may be overstated'

Returning to UK shores...
Recent figures produced by Moneycorp pointing to a mass repatriation of UK nationals living overseas may be overstated, it has been claimed.

A spokesperson from the Telegraph's weekly world edition, explained that while figures suggesting that 70 per cent of expats are considering a return to UK shores sound dramatic, they may belie a less sensational reality.

"To say, when asked by a Moneycorp researcher, that you have been thinking about returning to the UK is pretty meaningless," they said, explaining that anyone living a long distance from friends and families is likely to experience the occasional desire to return home.

For those concerned about the costs of living abroad, taking out an expat medical insurance policy may help to sidestep fees for expensive medical treatment.

Property going cheap in Spain...

Property going cheap in Spain

The property market price crash witnessed in Spain has left a lot of undervalued real estate up for grabs, according to Spanish Property Insight.

A spokesperson for the property advice portal, explained that while the market is likely to remain depressed this year, canny buyers will be able to snap up some excellent deals.

If your planning  a move to Spain you may also do well to research expat health insurance policies, as there may be limits to their entitlement to free healthcare in regions such as Valencia, which has recently introduced a ban on care for early-retiree expats.

Expat pensions 'should be election issue'

Expatriates' pensions should be an issue in the forthcoming general election, a group of campaigners has argued.

Of the 1.1 million British expats who are entitled to claim UK pensions, 540,000 cannot draw the full amount because of rules surrounding pensions being fixed at a flat rate, acording to research carried out in the Daily Express.

Most expats living in all EU countries and 15 others including Bermuda and the United States have their pension index linked to their country of residence. However, expatriates in 150 other countries have had their pensions fixed to the rate at which they were first drawn.

Campaigner John Markham, 76, from the Canadian Alliance of British Pensioners said the expat vote in the upcoming general election would be much higher than in the last.

"We want to get Britons living abroad to vote, but only for the parties that support our cause," he said.

Expats are advised to check they are covered under their overseas health insurance as it could help avoid being landed with costly medical bills or expensive hospital treatment.

April Medibroker specialise in providing international health insurance to clients living abroad or working abroad to both choose and place the right international health insurance products, to suit their expat medical insurance needs and budget.
